We extend a huge well done to Loretto's Under 16 rugby team for reaching the Scottish Schools Shield Final. Whilst the result didn't go their way, they were fantastic ambassadors for the school. We also thank Hamish (F5) for writing the following match report:
Arriving at Murrayfield for the Shield final, the entire U16 team was filled with awe. For many of us, this was our first experience of standing inside the stadium. And as we ran out onto the pitch, our confidence was boosted by consistent and courageous cheering from Loretto's 'Red Wall'.
The battle in the final against Edinburgh Academy (EA) was fierce and physical, delivering a standout display of grit and teamwork. EA took quick control of the game, with their hard carriers managing to score an early try in the first five minutes. But we did not let this discourage us; there was still plenty of time on the clock, and we had not yet had the opportunity to show our offensive abilities.
We worked hard in the first half, which eventually led to us scoring our first try from a pick and go from Giacomo on the try line. However, with EA's constant pressure on the ball and their excellent ability to spread the game out wide, we went on to concede a few tries. With the Red Wall still cheering behind us, we continued to fight for the game and an excellent try from Finlay gave us new drive for the ball. But EA were simply the better team on the day - helped by an impressive level of ferocity in their rucks - and they were always ultimately in control.
The game ended with us scoring a final try, after a lovely string of passes out wide allowed Harris to score in the corner. This last-gasp effort shows the high level of determination and tenacity within the team; even though we knew we were defeated, we kept going and gave it our absolute all until the very end.
We congratulate EA for their well-deserved win, and thank them for a match that was played in excellent spirit.
This was a tough loss for the team, as we all worked incredibly hard to get to the final. But the experience we had on that pitch was phenomenal, especially being supported by the roar of the Red Wall. And getting to the final at Murrayfield is still an incredible achievement. This was definitely an experience to remember, and we are infinitely grateful for the support of Loretto School.
