Earlier this month, Loretto's Model United Nations team travelled to Robert Gordon’s College to compete against eight schools representing twenty-two different countries from across the UN.
A number of schools pulled out at the last minute and some committees had to be dissolved. This meant a number of us had to re-prep for different motions or countries. We also had an early 5:00am start so we could arrive at the conference for 9:30am.
After a talk on the art of debate from Liam Kerr, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills in the Scottish Parliament, we broke off into our committees.
Topics from ‘Global issues surrounding immigration’ to ‘Regulation of lethal autonomous weapons’ were discussed, and Loretto won six awards between its two teams of four.
Congratulations to Edward M (U6), Ryan M (L6) and Archie B (U6) for winning ‘best delegate’ (representing France) in their respective committees, and to Imogen C (U6) for being awarded ‘highly commended’ for Japan. Well done also to Kirsten G (F5) for passing her first resolution on Saturday.
Loretto was able to secure a further award for Best Delegation in the competition, for the delegation of France’s strong performance in the emergency debate. They successfully proposed a legal framework to de-escalate tensions between Russia and America given the crisis of cyberattack threats from Russia and the US raising their readiness to DEFCON 2, alongside a consequential rise in misinformation from non-state actors.
The Model UN team now looks to continue its success at future competitions.
