We extend a huge well done to Loretto's 1st XV Rugby team for reaching the semi-final of this year's Boy's U18 National Schools Cup competition.
Their outstanding run saw them score 60+ points in three separate matches, and they put on another valiant display in yesterday’s semi-final match against Merchiston.
Held at Pinkie with the Red Wall out in full force, Loretto started well and were soon 22-0 up. However, an admirable fight-back from Merchiston saw them level the score to 36 all, before they took a 36-41 lead. Both teams showed incredible spirit and determination throughout the whole match, with Loretto only a meter away from another try in the final moments of the game.
But it was sadly not to be on this occasion, and Merchiston emerged victorious.
We congratulate Merchiston on their hard-fought win, thank them for a thrilling match and wish them all the best in the final.
We also praise Loretto’s 1st XV who – despite being exhausted and disappointed after the loss – showed true Lorettonian character by heading straight over to the Astro to cheer the Girls’ 1st XI Hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Fettes.
The Society would like to say the following to the team:
The whole Loretto community is incredibly proud of you, and we hope you are also proud of yourselves. You’ve set a wonderful example for younger members of the school – especially the Nippers who came to support the semi-final – by truly embodying the Loretto ethos of mind, body and spirit.
