For our latest OL Spotlight, we're delighted to feature Ted White (2013). Ted is the founder of WHISE Studios, a boutique mixing and mastering studio based in London and Liverpool. 

Q1. Tell us a little about your career and background?

“I'm a music producer and mastering engineer. I write, produce and master music for artists and brands, as well as releasing music under my own projects. After finishing Loretto, I moved to New York and started out as a tea boy in recording studios. That was my way into the industry, and from there I worked in studios all over, toured with bands and eventually opened my own studio in Liverpool and London, WHISE Studios and Soundnest Studios.”

Q2. What led to your career in music production?

“I wasn't very good at much else, so the career choice was pretty easy! I've always needed a creative outlet, whether that was playing records, playing live, working in the studio or recording sounds out in nature. Creating music has always been the thing that made the most sense to me.”

Q3. What would you say is the best aspect of your career?

“The travel and the people. I love experiencing new places and meeting incredible people from all walks of life. Working with artists from different genres and backgrounds means every day is different, and I'm always learning something new!”

Q4. What do you consider to be your biggest achievement?

“I've been super lucky to work with some really amazing artists and brands, but the one that I think is kind of cool was when I wrote a load of music for the iPhone. So it’s kind of weird to think that my cheesy music is in everyone’s pocket around the world! Working on the new Harry Potter Audio books was also super fun.”

Q5. What’s next for you?

“We've just opened the doors to our new London studio for WHISE Studios, so that's a big focus this year. We're also heavily involved in the immersive audio space and are working on some really exciting projects in that area, so there's plenty to look forward to.”

Q6. What advice would you give to current Lorettonians?

“Follow your passion. Stay curious, explore, ask questions, and meet as many people as you can. You never know where a conversation or opportunity might lead.”

“I always look back on my time at Loretto fondly. Whether it was sneaking into the music studio whenever I could, or all the amazing memories and chaos we all caused in Seton and Pinkie boarding houses!”
