For our latest OL Spotlight we're delighted to feature
Spenser Plakaris (2016), who was recently called to the Bar in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
This photograph of Spenser (left) was taken at his Call to the Bar ceremony, which took place on 13th December 2024.
He writes: 'This moment represents a significant milestone in my professional journey, and I couldn’t be more grateful.'
Q1. What led you to a career in Law?'I chose to read Law at university to deepen my understanding of the society in which I live, and to explore how I can make a positive impact on the lives of others, particularly those embroiled in conflict.'
Q2. What does the day-to-day of your job typically involve?'Although I am currently seeking pupillage, I can recall my routine as a paralegal at a prominent law firm in Nassau, The Bahamas. My day typically began with checking my work email and reporting to my supervisor, usually an attorney, regarding the case files in my portfolio. I would then conduct the necessary legal research and, by the end of the day, provide my supervisor with a deliverable or a detailed report summarizing my findings. A very exciting day, I know.'
Q3. What would you say is the most rewarding aspect of your job?'What I find truly rewarding is offering clients a solution or a clear roadmap to achieve it, helping them resolve the challenges they are facing.'
Q4. What’s next for you?'After completing my pupillage, ideally at a firm specializing in civil law, I plan to practise as in-house counsel for a period or perhaps explore a completely unexpected path, like underwater basket weaving. The future is still wide open!'
Q5.What’s your favourite memory from being at Loretto?'On a cool, sunny day during the final month of the term in Lower Sixth, I found myself playing tennis with a fellow Pinkie boarder on the hockey field. With great confidence and authority, I argued with my opponent about the rules of the game, and ultimately managed to convince him. Although, in hindsight, I’m quite certain we were both equally wrong.'
Q6. What advice would you give to current Lorettonians?'To be optimistic about tomorrow, even in the face of today’s challenges.'
