OL Spotlight
Sandi Deans (1989)
Monday 23rd March 2026

For our latest OL Spotlight, we're delighted to feature Professor Sandi Deans (1989). Sandi is a Director of GenQA, a global, not-for-profit External Quality Assessments (EQA) provider for the genomics service. She is also a Consultant Clinical Scientist at NHS Lothian, Edinburgh and Professor of Clinical Genomics at the University of Edinburgh’s Institute of Genetics and Cancer.

Q1. Tell us a little about your career and background?

“I gained a first class BSc (Hons) degree at Aberdeen University in Biochemistry and Genetics, followed by a PhD in Molecular Pathology at University College London. I wasn’t keen on a career in research so moved into the clinical side of genomics in 1997, and trained as a Molecular Genetics Clinical Scientist at Guy’s Hospital, London. I became Director of GenQA in 2005 and, in parallel, I have been involved in the delivery of the 100,000 Genomes Project and I’m Deputy Director of the Genomics Unit commissioning the NHS England Genomic Medicine Service.”

Q2. What led to your interest in genomics?

“I was always interested in biology and when we were set loose in biology class to examine pea plants for genetic differences, I knew I had found my niche. This memory returned to me when I visited Mendel’s laboratory in the Czech Republic a few years ago.”

Q3. What would you say is the most enjoyable aspect of your career?

“I love working in a field that is continually evolving and expanding across healthcare systems. The progress of genomic medicine is easily demonstrated by earlier detection of preventative diseases, personalised cancer treatments and providing quicker diagnosis for those with rare and inherited disorders.”

Q4. What do you consider to be your biggest success so far?

“One of my highlights was when I was awarded Healthcare Scientist of the Year in 2019 by Professor Dame Sue Hill (Chief Scientific Officer, NHS England) and David Prior (Chairman, NHS England) for services to genomics and external quality assessment. This led to attending the Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, which was one of the last hosted by the late Queen.”

Q5. What’s next for you?

“Many, many things! GenQA is expanding into the Far East and South America, so more travelling and supporting those who can benefit from genomic medicine.”

Q6. What advice would you give to current Lorettonians?

“Follow a path that excites you. If you have a role that makes you get up in the morning with a spring in your step, then you have achieved something truly valuable. Don't be afraid to try new things, embrace opportunities, and remember that learning never stops. Finding fulfilment in your work is just as important as any formal success or accolade.”
