Field of Remembrance
Wednesday 10th November 2021
A timely reminder that after the first Poppy Day in 1921, using artificial poppies imported from France, the Disabled Society, founded in 1920 by Old Lorettonian George Howson, M.C. (1904), was commissioned by the British Legion to make poppies for the 1922 appeal. Howson founded the first Poppy Factory in London, moving it in 1926 to a disused brewery in Richmond which was bought using money which he donated to the cause. In 1928, Howson instituted the Field of Remembrance at Westminster, which continues to this day and has inspired similar fields elsewhere, including in recent years on The Orchard at Loretto.
