OL Spotlight - Professor Tim Inglis (1977)

For our latest OL Spotlight, we feature Professor Tim Inglis (1977), who is a Professor at The University of Western Australia (UWA) Medical School, a Consultant medical microbiologist with the Western Australian state pathology service (PathWest Laboratory Medicine WA) and Colonel at the Directorate of Army Health in Canberra.

Tim is also a veteran runner, and recently completed the Sydney Marathon in its first year as a World Marathon Major.

Q1. Tell us a little about your career and background?

“I studied medicine at the University of Southampton and completed specialist training in medical microbiology in Leeds. Following three years in Singapore, I settled in Western Australia with the state pathology service and, from there, I moved to a clinical academic post with the University of Western Australia. I also joined the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps in 2002 as a medical specialist, and have been in continuous reserve service since.”

Q2. What would you say is the best aspect of your career?

“Mentoring the next generation of doctors, researchers and soldiers, particularly when they combine two or all three of the above.”

Q3. What do you consider to be your biggest success (so far)?

“The discovery of a rapid method for antibiotic testing during sepsis.”

Q4. What led to your love of running?

“This is a recent development, as my OL contemporaries can confirm. In short, ParkRun then COVID. Trail running kept on going here throughout the pandemic.”

Q5. What’s next for you?

“Setting up a new teaching programme at the university.”

Q6. What advice would you give to current Lorettonians?

Remember to check your units tally” - Gavin McDowall (Hon.) in A level Physics.

Dimensional complexity is what my research group has mastered using machine learning, and turned into new diagnostic methods.
