Sunshine on Leith was a fantastic opportunity for Loretto pupils. The experience of performing music by The Proclaimers was amazing, as many of the pupils and teachers had grown up with their music. Bringing this show to life will be one of my fondest memories after leaving Loretto.
Drama is hugely important at Loretto, and the Spring musical is an event which everyone looks forward to each year. Drama allows individuals to explore different paths in their school career. It also encourages pupils of all ages to step outside their comfort zone and become more well-rounded individuals, who have experience in many different disciplines. It is always really encouraging to see so many younger pupils, in particular, perform on stage and pursue their passions.
We began rehearsals for Sunshine on Leith at the beginning of the Spring term and rehearsed every Monday and Thursday during activity slots, as well as on Saturday mornings as part of our enrichment activities. This gave us plenty of time to explore the show in a lot of depth and allowed us to give our best possible performances when it came to show week.
The brilliant thing about Drama at Loretto is that there are so many different areas in which pupils can be involved. We have a fantastic tech crew and live band who work very hard to bring the show to life, and pupils also have the chance to discover different aspects of the theatre away from the stage, such as lighting and sound design.
There are many moments from rehearsals and shows that stand out, and some of my favourite memories from this year were creating, teaching and learning choreography, and building friendships with pupils from different year groups who I don’t always interact with in a usual school day.
Sunshine on Leith was especially important to me as it was my last show in Loretto Theatre, where I first discovered my love for performance. Drama is a fantastic area to be involved in at Loretto as it helps build an even tighter community and provides wonderful opportunities!
